See D.L. Hughley on Saturday

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Stand-up comic D.L. Hughley is headlining this year’s Kiss Comedy Jam, set for 8 p.m. Saturday at the Greenville Convention Center. Tickets for the Greenville show, presented by WIKS-FM 101.9, are on sale locally in Havelock and New Bern.

A comedian and actor who starred in the ABC sitcom “The Hughleys” and was the first host of “Comic View” on BET, Hughley will bring his Unapologetic Tour to Greenville with guest host Darren “D.S.” Sanders and musical guest I-15.

Tickets are $41 for general admission and $51 for VIP seating and are available at Image Update on East Main Street in Havelock, Flyin’ High Wireless in New Bern and on the Kiss FM Web site.

It’s a pricey show, but Hughley is a marquee comic who’s worth every penny.

Sermons’ lifetime of leadership

Today’s edition of the Havelock News features a front-page story on Eva Sermons, the city’s longest-serving commissioner. Her current term ends Monday when newcomer George Liner is sworn in along with incumbents Danny Walsh, Bob Priesing and Jim Stuart.

Though I’d like to think our story was comprehensive, we barely scratched the surface. Sermons has been a dynamic leader in Havelock since arriving here in 1959. How could 800 words — or 8,000; or 80,000 — even begin to tell her story?

It’s no understatement to say Commissioner Sermons truly is the heart of Havelock.

If that’s a smidgen repetitive for you, you’re probably not in government. Can’t say it enough times to penetrate the ponderous skulls of the well-meaning lunkheads we put in office.

A Missouri teen hanged herself last year after receiving insulting MySpace messages purportedly from a teen boy. Earlier messages from the profile, which had been created by a neighborhood woman and accessed by the girl’s classmates and at least one mother, suggested the fake boy had a crush on the teen.
