Pamlico’s anti-drug witch hunt

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Public school students in Pamlico County could be subjected to random drug tests and stripped of school parking and athletic privileges if they refuse, according to a Pamlico Ink story.

The school superintendent announced plans to sporadically pull students from class and test their saliva for illegal drugs. Five of six parents who spoke at a forum on the new drug testing opposed the measure, but school officials didn’t seem to listen.

Whatever happened to reasonable suspicion? Probable cause? Must be alien concepts in this brave new world. Let’s hope Craven County doesn’t get this carried away.

Tell us about your first kiss

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Thursday is Valentine’s Day, and a few well-known Havelock residents share stories of their first kisses in tomorrow’s edition of the Havelock News.

One former mayor’s first kiss was with the girl he would later marry. A longtime commissioner remembers smooching a sailor. And our editor, Ken Buday, first locked lips on the playground at Annunciation Catholic School.

As for yours truly, my first kiss took place at the Hollywood 18 movie theater in New Port Richey, Fla. I was 16 and, to this day, I can’t remember what movie we saw — not that I saw a great deal of it.
